Design[]
Azukiarai is a modernization of a Japanese mythological creature known as the the Azukiarai, a ghostly Yokai resembling a grotesque short man. The creature is traditionally depicted as appearing near rivers, but is depicted here living in a trash can. "Shoki-Shoki", the word Azukiarai ends his sentences in, is a sound traditionally made the creature in the original folk tales; it is the sound of red azuki beans being ground into paste. His design is also based on a lizard. His trash-theme may be based on another yokai, Chirizuka kaio, a trash collecting king of tsukumogami, a sub-type of yokai.
